BMI Formula: BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m)]²
Example: 70 kg ÷ (1.70)² = 24.2 BMI — Normal weight. For Indians, WHO recommends Asian cutoffs: BMI ≥ 23 is overweight and BMI ≥ 27.5 is obese.
The standard WHO BMI scale was developed for Caucasian populations. Research shows Indians develop metabolic diseases at lower BMI levels. The ICMR recommends BMI 18.5–22.9 as normal for Indians. At BMI 23+, Indians face elevated risk of Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
For Indians and South Asians, BMI 18.5 to 22.9 is normal. BMI 23+ indicates overweight risk for Indians — lower than the WHO global cutoff of 25. Indians have higher body fat % at the same BMI compared to Caucasians.
BMI Formula: Weight (kg) ÷ [Height in meters]². Example: 70 kg ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9 BMI. Use our free calculator above — enter weight, height, age, and gender for instant accurate results.
Standard BMI is less accurate for South Asians. Indians carry higher body fat and abdominal fat at lower BMI values. Our calculator includes Asian cutoffs recommended by WHO. Body fat percentage and waist circumference provide more complete health pictures.
Using Asian cutoffs: BMI 23.0–27.4 is overweight. BMI 27.5+ is obese. These are lower than global WHO cutoffs (25 overweight, 30 obese) because South Asians face higher health risks at lower BMI.
Devine formula: Men = 50 + 2.3 kg per inch above 5 feet. Women = 45.5 + 2.3 kg per inch above 5 feet. Our calculator shows all 4 major formulas — Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi — plus their average for the best estimate.
To lose 0.5 kg/week (safe rate), create a 500 calorie daily deficit. Our calculator computes your TDEE and subtracts the appropriate calories based on your selected weight loss rate (0.25–1.0 kg/week).
Monthly when actively working towards a weight goal. Every 3 months for maintenance. Always track trends over time — not single measurements. Pair BMI with waist circumference for more complete health monitoring.
The BMI formula is identical for both. However, healthy body fat % differs — women naturally carry 8–10% more body fat than men at the same BMI. Our calculator uses gender-specific formulas for body fat estimation and ideal weight.
