How to Use GST Calculator India

Enter the base amount, select the GST rate slab (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%), choose Exclusive (add GST to amount) or Inclusive (extract GST from total), and select whether it's an Intra-state (CGST + SGST) or Inter-state (IGST) transaction. Get instant breakup — no login, no install.

How GST Calculator Works — Formula

GST Exclusive: GST Amount = Base × Rate/100 · Total = Base + GST
GST Inclusive (Reverse): Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate/100) · GST = Total − Base
CGST & SGST = GST Amount ÷ 2 each (for intra-state transactions).
Example: ₹10,000 base at 18% → GST = ₹1,800 · CGST = ₹900 · SGST = ₹900 · Total = ₹11,800.

CGST vs SGST vs IGST — What's the Difference?

CGST (Central GST) goes to Central Government. SGST (State GST) goes to State Government. Both are charged on intra-state transactions (seller and buyer in the same state), each at half the total GST rate. IGST (Integrated GST) is charged on inter-state transactions and goes entirely to the Central Government, which then distributes to the destination state.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GST and how is it calculated in India?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax, effective from July 2017, replacing VAT, service tax, and excise duty. It is calculated as: GST Amount = Base Price × GST Rate / 100. For a ₹10,000 product at 18% GST, the tax is ₹1,800 and total price is ₹11,800.

What is the difference between GST inclusive and GST exclusive?

GST Exclusive: The listed price does not include GST — GST is added on top. Most B2B invoices use this. GST Inclusive: The listed price already includes GST — you need to extract the tax component. Most retail MRP prices are GST inclusive. Use our Reverse GST calculator to find the base price from an inclusive amount.

When is CGST+SGST charged vs IGST?

CGST + SGST applies when buyer and seller are in the same state (intra-state) — each at half the total GST rate. IGST applies when buyer and seller are in different states (inter-state) — at the full GST rate. This also applies to e-commerce transactions and imports.

What are the GST rates in India 2025?

India has 5 main GST slabs: 0% (exempt — fresh food, educational services), 5% (essential goods — medicines, basic food items), 12% (standard — phones, processed food), 18% (most goods and services — restaurants, software, electronics), and 28% (luxury goods — cars, tobacco, aerated drinks + Cess).

What is a GSTIN and how do I validate it?

GSTIN (GST Identification Number) is a 15-digit unique ID for GST-registered businesses. Format: 2-digit state code + 10-digit PAN + 1-digit entity number + Z + 1 check digit. Example: 27AAAAA0000A1Z5 (Maharashtra). Use our GSTIN validator in the sidebar to check format validity. Register at gst.gov.in if your annual turnover exceeds ₹20L (₹10L for special states).

Is GST applicable on all products and services?

No — certain items are exempt from GST: fresh fruits/vegetables, milk, eggs, bread, educational services, healthcare services, and petrol/diesel (under state VAT). Most goods and services above ₹20L annual turnover threshold attract GST. Check HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) code for your product's specific rate at the official GST portal.

How to file GST returns?

GST returns are filed monthly or quarterly on gst.gov.in. GSTR-1: outward supplies (monthly/quarterly). GSTR-3B: monthly summary return with tax payment. GSTR-9: annual return. Use our GST calculator to prepare accurate figures before filing. Small taxpayers (under ₹5Cr turnover) can opt for QRMP scheme (quarterly filing).

What is Input Tax Credit (ITC) in GST?

Input Tax Credit allows businesses to deduct the GST paid on purchases (inputs) from the GST collected on sales (output). For example: if you paid ₹900 GST on raw materials and collected ₹1,800 GST on sales, you pay only ₹900 to the government. ITC reduces cascading tax effects and is claimed through GSTR-3B filing.
